We’re all familiar with the classic “I hate my sibling!” trope that has been popularized by the general media. People complain about how annoying, nosy, and disrespectful their younger siblings are, and how arrogant, condescending, and detached their older siblings have become. But ultimately, growing up with siblings offers a unique connection unable to be found anywhere else.

As an only child, being the only focus of parental expectations induces significantly more stress. With siblings, parental attention is split, reducing the stress associated with those expectations. But siblings cause their own kind of pressure, such as competing with older ones  or guiding younger ones. However, siblings are more inclined to act as supporters than pushy parents, and only children have to shoulder the responsibilities of the household on their own.

But this peer presence is exactly why “you have to share with siblings!” is one of the most common complaints. To that, our parents repeat the refrain: “sharing is caring.” But it’s true — learning early on to accept something as simple as sharing clothes or not taking things that aren’t yours sets up the nourishment of real-world skills. Life with a sibling gives a head start on building patience, negotiation, and knowing how to brush off minor problems. Over time, strong bonds form, creating opportunities for humor and comfort.

Every sibling relationship varies, but generally, children with siblings develop social skills earlier. In the case of an only child, they get their parents’ undivided attention, which can help them hone their independence and responsibility. However, growing up with siblings offers a natural way for kids to learn sharing, conflict resolution, and empathy. In one 2013 study in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, mutual sibling warmth became stronger during the transition to teenage years. 

People interact with others every day, but having siblings provides a constant environment that helps a child nurture understanding and compassion even more. In a sibling household, scarce resources and sharing may lead to many arguments. As a result, most kids quickly learn how to compromise and persuade people. What we personally relate to the most is that unlike friendships, which can end after a major fight, siblings remain in the same house. This forces children to learn conflict resolution. They are prone to experiencing the full cycle of getting angry, calming down, and making amends, many, many times. In other words, children with siblings grow up in an environment where relationships matter greatly. This constant practice ensures that when they enter school or team environments, they will be proficient in managing group dynamics.

Though only children often become more imaginative, take on more responsibilities, and grow comfortable with independence and solitude, having a sibling is a  remarkable experience. Your siblings are some of the few people to really understand your family, which benefits you greatly in the long run. The continuous practice in social skills gained in a shared household builds emotional intelligence, and making the early sacrifices of sharing your toys and clothes are a small price to pay for a truly special bond.
