On May 23, the Princeton High School Orchestra embarked on their 2024 European tour led by PHS Orchestra conductor Robert Loughran. They landed in Milan, Italy after a long flight, and traveled to Venice over the next few days. There, they performed in a music festival at Riva del Garda.

After the music festival, they ventured into Verbier, Switzerland, where they played in two concerts for primary school students. The orchestra finished the tour in Paris, France, where they performed at Lycée International Saint-Germain-en-Laye school and Église de la Madeleine.

Loughran’s goal for the tour was to reach a variety of audiences with the contrasting repertoire the orchestra prepared, bringing together audiences from different cultures and backgrounds.

“[We played] a lot of pieces ... close to twenty ... I [was] definitely most excited about the movie theme songs,” said flutist Emily Leng ’27.

Other soloists in the orchestra, along with two vocalists, Reva Doshi ’24 and Nicole Lee ’26, played significant roles in uniting individuals through music.

“[We featured] some soloists, like Audrey Kang [’24], and Sunjun Jo [’24],” said Loughran. “[They also did a piece together] called ‘Schindler’s List’ from John Williams.”

To successfully execute the iconic melody from the film, the orchestra had to focus on conveying the beauty of the sorrowful sound.

Another soloist featured in the repertoire is oboist Amanda Sun ’24, who performed the main melody in “Gabriel’s Oboe.”

“It’s from a movie called ‘The Mission’,” said Sun. “It’s very lyrical and I [liked] the orchestra’s parts as well.”

This lyrical style [contrasted] with the music from “Schindler’s List,” reflecting the orchestra’s variety of compositions.

The orchestra’s trip to Europe was not only a musical experience, but also a memorable opportunity for the musicians to bond, meet new people all over the world, and explore various cultures.

“The cuisine ... between all those three different regions [was extraordinary],” said Loughran. “[As well as being] able to maximize the potential of trying new things and savoring new tastes.”

The European tour was a chance for members to venture into newfound attractions and places, exploring various cultures.

“[I was] just super excited to be in Europe because [I had] never been [to] Europe,” said Leng. “[We saw] Moulin Blanc [in Switzerland].”

In addition, the orchestra had the opportunity to explore multiple historical sites, such as the West Bank of Paris where Ernest Hemingway lived, and a French chateau.

“It was so interesting to explore places with such rich cultures and histories,” said violinist Meghna Myneni ’25. “The trip really opened my eyes to different ways of life.”

PHS Orchestra brings unity through music in European tour

Mug cake recipe
My sisters and I have a fun tradition of making mug cakes, especially when it's cold and snowy outside. We love gathering in our cozy sunroom, which has heated floors, and enjoying them together. Our favorite flavor is chocolate chip, but we also like trying out different variations, for example birthday cake. Mug cakes are exactly what they are named, a small cake in a mug, and we've found that slightly undercooking them makes them extra soft and delicious. It's these simple moments of togetherness and warmth that we cherish the most. This recipe is also perfect for Valentine’s Day because it’s got one of the most popular Valentine’s Day ingredients (chocolate) and it’s something personal that you can make and give to people you love and care about.

Ingredients:
5 ounces dark chocolate (70%)
4 1/2 ounces unsalted butter
3 tablespoons good espresso
2 large eggs
3/4 cup superfine sugar
Steps:
Preheat the oven to 250°F. 
Snap the chocolate into a heatproof bowl, add the butter, espresso and a good pinch of sea salt, and place over a pan of gently simmering water to melt very slowly until smooth, stirring regularly. Meanwhile, in another bowl, whip  the eggs and sugar together until pale and doubled in size, then carefully fold in the melted chocolate mixture.
Boil the kettle. Divide the mixture between 6 coffee cups or mugs and put them into a roasting pan. Place the pan in the oven, then carefully pour in enough boiling kettle water to come halfway up the side of the cups. Bake for exactly 20 minutes, then carefully remove from the oven and leave to cool in the water for 2 hours. 
To serve, shave over some extra chocolate, or add fresh fruit like cherries, blood oranges or wild strawberries, with a dollop of yogurt or crème fraîche.

Strawberry waffles recipe
One of my favorite recipes to make is waffles. They are light, creamy, and maintain a softness within, yet a hint of crispness on the outside. Not only are they incredibly delicious, but they are also simple and easily customizable (and are great with strawberries!). I love preparing this treat for my family and I in the morning, and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a homemade breakfast? After all, few things are as special as a plate of freshly made waffles topped with strawberries and honey. There’s nothing quite like starting Valentine’s Day with such a sweet aroma.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Baking time: 3-4 minutes each

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1 tbsp sugar
¼ tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
1 cup mlk 
1 egg
2 tbsp of melted butter
Strawberries, sliced
Honey 

Recipe
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. 
In another bowl, beat the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined. . 
Pour the wet ingredients into thee dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful to not overmix, as the batter should still be slightly lumpy. Add some of the sliced strawberries into batter and lightly mix. 
Lightly grease the waffle maker with a cooking spray or some melted butter. Pour the batter into waffle iron (preferably a heart-shaped one!) and cook until golden brown. 
Carefully remove the waffles from the iron and serve them on a plate. Top the waffles with more sliced strawberries and drizzle honey on top. 


Warm recipes for a chilly winter

   Beneath the subtle lights that illuminate the frozen floor of the arena, the scent of sweat and cold air fills the room with anticipation. Yitian Zhao ’24 steps onto the rink along with his teammates. Game on. As the puck glides on the glistening ice, he focuses his eyes on it, anticipating the moment to take a shot. Zhao moves with precision, gaining more momentum as he reaches his goal. The backdrop is filled with nothing but the crowd cheering and the crisp echoes of the skate blades cutting the ice. 
   At a young age of 5, Zhao began his ice hockey career after learning how to skate for 3 years. Inspired by his older sister, a figure skater, Zhao watched her practice and eventually, he grew accustomed to the ice. 
   “It just came down to choosing figure skating or hockey,” said Zhao. “It's a fast paced game, and I also like hitting people––[that’s why I chose hockey.]” 
    Ever since then, Zhao has dedicated much time to the sport, especially towards playing club hockey. While balancing training sessions throughout the week, Zhao would also travel for matches during the weekend. 
   “The local teams aren’t at the highest level, so I would always have to travel to places like Philly to play Tier 1 clubs––and I still do.” said Zhao. 
   Although Zhao’s love for hockey has led him so far, Zhao’s packed schedule posed a challenge. However, Zhao’s determination to pursue his passion ultimately overcame that uncertainty. 
   “I was swamped with schoolwork, and hockey almost became like a chore that I had to do before I could go back home,” said Zhao. “I knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I still enjoyed playing out on the ice with my teammates.”
   Part of the reason Zhao dedicated so much time to hockey was his dad, whose guidance instilled in Zhao to always strive for improvement. 
   “I enjoyed practicing by myself, but it was mainly him who pushed me to where I am now,” said Zhao. “He would take me to all types of practices and tournaments to get some exposure and practice, and even if I sometimes didn't want to, I believe that it has let me get to the skill level I'm at right now.”
   As an upperclassman in the team, Zhao pays it forward by providing advice to his teammates. Drawing from his father's influence, Zhao gives tips on strengthening his teammates’ game. 
   “If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t be motivated to improve,” said Zhao. “Outside of motivation, I think that focusing on the basics, like skating and stickhandling, is a must to try and play or get better at the sport. Having a strong foundation will let you build off of it.”
   Some of this advice is based on his own personal experience, and his growth throughout the years. Despite encountering some bumps along the way, his devotion for hockey has triumphed over these obstacles, making way for his performance to flourish, especially within the team.
   “I feel like high school hockey has given me the opportunity to do [improve myself] because the competition is at a lower level than my club teams, so I can be more laid back and try to mess around without much consequence,’ said Zhao. “It's less of a grind to me and I get to mess around with my teammates on the ice and in school as well.” 
   Zhao envisions continuing to play hockey beyond the bounds of the Mercer County Ice Rink, and into a new environment where he can train at a higher level. 
   “I plan to play college hockey. I’m going to try and look for a D3 offer, and maybe try and go D1 if I can,” said Zhao. 
   With the ice hockey season starting again, Zhao is hoping to make his last year on the team a fun, memorable experience. 
   “I love everything about hockey, from the pinging sound of the puck going bar down off the crossbar to the .... action in the game.” said Zhao. “Even if we had a rough home opener, I have high hopes for how the rest of the season will turn out. It would be amazing to end my high school hockey career on a high, and I’m sure that the other seniors would agree, too.”

Athlete of the Month: Yitian Zhao

A newcomer to the sport at the age of 9, Shawn Chuang ’24 has worked his way up since to secure a spot on the national Taiwanese Alpine Ski Team. Beyond playing on the team, Chuang alternates between patrolling the National Winter Activity Center and training through racing on its slopes. Chuang is set on strengthening his skills even further back in New Zealand, with plans to return and dedicate his summer to skiing exclusively. Although it hasn’t been an easy road, with learning the basics and navigating the demands of being a student athlete, Chuang remains persistent with his passion for the sport. He is resolute in pursuing his passion during his gap year, aspiring to reach even higher heights and to participate in the Olympics.

How long have you been skiing?
   The very first time I skied was in winter 2015, but it used to be just [during] winter break [and] … it was just a family thing … for fun. I started to seriously ski –– and by that I mean I would go more than once a year –– in my freshman year. ... [During] COVID, [when] we were online, I actually stayed at the mountain for the whole year [and] went up the mountain during lunchtime or after school. ... Even now, like every weekend, I go up to the mountain. For half of the day I'll be racing and half of the day I'll be patrolling.

Do you effectively balance both school and skiing?
   The thing about patrolling is that we usually [are] just sitting … in a little cabin at the top of the mountain. And we only leave or we only have to leave if we get a call. So, while we're waiting for calls, I usually just do homework. ... Last year, [there were even] a few times ... I would do my readings on the ski lift. Also, [I] just don't really sleep, especially last year –– [it] was really bad. ... [But] I'm definitely able to manage my time better this year. 

How do you improve your skills?
   I mean it's going to the gym too much, honestly. … I think a lot of it is not just when you're training [and you] do it absent-mindedly; [I think it’s important to be] always be aware of what your goal is. So for me, for every single run I take, I give myself a specific goal.

How did you first get interested in skiing?
   I grew up in Taiwan, where it doesn't snow. [I first got interested because of] the “We Ski” Wii game [that] my sister [and I] would play. [When I actually tried it], it was something that came more naturally to me than most other sports. I would not consider myself [as] someone who's very athletically inclined [at all], but skiing was just something that I was able to pick up relatively fast, and I really, really love it, so that's just kind of the direction I took. It just took off. 

Do you have any role models that you look up to? If yes, how have they inspired you?
    [There is an] American skier called Mikaela Shiffrin, and she's absolutely insane. There's also this girl called Maggie Lee. She represented Taiwan at the Winter Olympics last season, and I trained with her in New Zealand ... [in] the Chinese national team. ... She's kind of who I look up to, [since I usually think], “I want to be you one day.”

What kinds of competitions have you participated in? And how do you mentally prepare for them?
   I do racing, where it's just timewise. ... There's four different categories of ski racing: small turns, slightly bigger turns, even bigger turns, and [greater] curves. [For] the [two] smaller events, … it's more technical, and the other two we call speed events, because they're the ones where people go 80 to 90 miles per hour shooting on the slopes.

   [Mainly], I just take deep breaths and tell myself it's not that serious. Because for me, [while] I can technically tell people that I'm on the national team, ... I'm still very much a beginner in the sport. So, everything to me right now is a learning experience ... I just do my best. 

Are there any achievements you are proud of?
   Having a race where I represented Taiwan was really cool, [since] the race had some [of] the best [skiers]. I think the guy who won that race was 20th in the world. So obviously, it's beating a lot of role models. And I think honestly, for me, my biggest achievement would just be getting into the sport [professionally] ... because it was something ... I've wanted to do [ever since I started skiing]. I saw racers, and I wanted to do it, but a lot of it was just, “Why would I go to ski racing? … Most ski racers start when they're like 3 years old, and I started when I was 17.”

   There's a bit of a gap there and I put it off for a bit, [since] there were a few teams ... [who told me], “Nah, you're too old. We're not gonna take you.”... And for me, it was having that persistence to finally start doing the sport that I've always really wanted to do. 

What kinds of challenges have you run into, and have you overcome them yet?
   Ski racing is a sport that's very [much based on] nepotism, [because] there's almost zero resources out there publicly available; I remember just trying to figure out what the different events [and] rules were. ... It's really different because if you're trying to get into a sport like soccer, you can just Google [the] rules of soccer and it's really easy to figure it out ... [I think] the biggest challenge would be [the fact that] I don't have the connections with [close friends] or parents who ski race, or [live] in a place where everybody ski races. 

   So just getting the knowledge of how the sport works, how you train, and how you prepare your skis ... was the biggest challenge. ... I reached out to a lot of people, [which includes] Maggie, [who has] been really helpful. I have her contact information [and] regularly [I ask her], “How do I do this?” And it's just finding people who are like this has really helped me overcome these challenges. 

What is it about skiing that you think others should also follow and get into?
    [I’m] not going to lie; it's not a sport where I think most people should try, because it's so deceivingly difficult and, to be very blunt, it's horrendously expensive. ... [Not only is it] physically demanding, but it's also mentally [challenging]. ... [But], if you really love [to] challenge [yourself] and really want to have something where you have to put everything into it …, [then] I think ski racing is a really awesome thing. ... It's a blast and the people are great. 

What are your future goals in skiing? And do you see yourself continuing after high school?
   [I’m] hoping to go to the Olympics one day. ... It's most people’s dream ... [and] right now I'm planning on taking a gap year after high school to ski. ... [I’ve already talked] to some programs and coaches that I've met in New Zealand about different programs around the world — mostly in Europe –– that I can do for the whole year.

Navigating the slopes with Shawn Chuang '24

   A year ago in late September, Paulo Barbosa ’25 turned a shared pastime among him and his friends into an established group now known as the Frisbee Club. While this circle of friends has been playing scrimmages together on the front lawn since 2021, they’ve transformed this activity into a formal club, with the aim of collectively improving their skills in a fun environment. 
   Barbosa first found his passion for the sport during his freshman year, when the gym teachers Heather Serverson and Kelsey O’Gorman introduced frisbee to his class. After that moment, Barbosa grew inspired to learn how to play frisbee, and later on, guided members through watching videos, warmups, and scrimmages. 
   “Everybody's been much more excited about frisbee in the Frisbee Club because [we are] going through the same journey improving together,” Barbosa said.
   Within these groups, the club practices their aim and catching, as well as specific throws such as the forehand, backhand, and overhand. 
   “I come around to make sure people are releasing the momentum of the frisbee correctly … [and] fine tune everybody's throw to make it better,” said Barbosa. “Then afterward we get into scrimmage teams, and that helps people practice more on catching and running.”
   While each member is dedicated to enhancing their skills, the club has a wide variety of skill sets, ranging from beginners to experienced players. 
   “We make sure to include everybody fairly and we also evenly balance teams during scrimmages to make sure everybody has a very fun and inclusive time,” said Barbosa. “I also make sure to tell our better members that we should focus more on including the newer people rather than trying to win a game because you want... them [to] have that fun experience with the club.
    Although the Frisbee Club is relatively new, the membership has increased since the Club Fair, where they brought in around 15 more members. With plans to promote the club more on their Instagram page, @phs_ultimate_frisbee_club, Barbosa is determined to share his passion for frisbee with the rest of the student body. 
   “Everybody's really excited to play,” said Barbosa. “I got people emailing me when the next Frisbee Club [meeting] is even though it's really cold, so I think the general well-being and... participant tendency of our members have boosted... because we've been able to fine-tune everything more.”
   One major goal Barbosa is hoping to achieve is for members to play in a more energetic and competitive environment, by joining the American Association of Ultimate Frisbee. With free pinnies and equipment given by the Association, Barbosa plans to use these resources to train before playing in competitions and tournaments. 
   “We've also been recently thinking about setting smaller tournaments between the schools [we’ve talked to] with our members,” said Barbosa. “I know I have a contact in Hun who might be able to help the Princeton Ultimate Frisbee club grow and … maybe we'll make up games with Hun in the future.”
   In addition to playing in a challenging atmosphere, Barbosa aspires for these bonds the club forged to last even after he graduates, carrying on his legacy and determination to share his love for frisbee. 
   “I was just really excited and happy to see so many people [who] wanted to play frisbee and ... get some good exercise in, and I'm really happy that it was Frisbee,” said Barbosa. “I can see ourselves going way farther with this because our team... is just [this] close now.

Cheer: How would you describe the routine (concept, music, stunts, challenges) & how is it different compared to previous years?

Ashlynn Potter ’24- “I think the routine is different this year because this year we were able to have a Universal Cheerleaders Association camp over the summer, so we learned a lot of dance routines during [those] three days. Our routine this year implements one of the UCA routines, and then changes and extends it afterwards. The music is very upbeat and is different from our typical remixes, but still very fitting. We had a lot of challenges to overcome with the stunts because of injuries, causing us to have to put in new stunters at the last minute. By working hard, we were able to do our best in making a more complex stunt routine. A lot of the stunts are also new which we’ve learned this year from the Princeton University coach, who came a few times with Princeton University cheerleaders to help us create our competition routines, which is something new in comparison to last year as well.”

Valeria Trujillo ’26- “Our cheer routine this year was very dynamic and an energetic performance. I think it showed our team’s determination and our spirit for the school. Compared to previous years, I think our team has added new stunts and movements to captivate the audience. I think our cheer routines have evolved to become more challenging, to look more united, and more entertaining to showcase the dedication and talent of our team.”
Alex Woodbury ’24- “Our routine is crazy with lots of different stunts and dance parts in it. This year is definitely more difficult than years prior! But the difficulty is what makes it fun as it pushes all of us!	”		

Band: favorite song + why? 
Ishaan Banerjee ’24-  “I loved playing ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ by Jet. Our drummer Sammy introduced us to the song, and it’s a super fun tune! The distorted guitar breaks and the moving horn lines make for a super energetic sound, and as always, Vivian sounded incredible on it.”
Wynne Baird ’24 (bass)- “Probably ‘I Wish’ –– it was fun to play on bass and I really like Stevie Wonder, so I was glad that it made the set list.”
Corbin Kasziba ’25- “‘Eye of the Tiger’ because it was... the song the crowd was most excited for.”

Football: which player really supported you/shone during the game  how?
Joseph George ’25- “Definitely Elisio Moncada; He played really [well] at linebacker as always and made great plays throughout the game. I love playing next to him and we work really well together; we’re always there for each other on and off the field.
Anthony Famiglietti ’24- “Dante Digiulio; he was always putting the team first. And in the second half [of] his speech, ... he said, ‘Coach is right –– if we want to win it’s on us,’ and that really got me and the rest of the team going.”
Ellinton Foster ’26-  “I would say Ben Walden... because he’s just there if you make a mistake. He’s gonna tell you and make sure you don’t do it again.”

Crowd: what are you wearing for the white out? What led you to this decision/what made you choose it?
Finn Neuneier ’24- “I’m wearing a white sweater –– white because of the white out, and a sweater because it’s cold.”
Glendy Deleon ’27- “I wore [a] white [Latinos Unidos t-shirt] for the white out and because of the weather.”
Annesofie Otte ’25- “I am wearing white jeans and an old Princeton football shirt. I’m wearing this to join in with the theme of [the] white out and I’m wearing the football shirt to match with the other managers.”

Homecoming Spread

In the sports industry, where records are defeated and rising athletes triumph, one challenge remains unaddressed: gender bias. While both genders share an exceptional skill level, women’s sports have received less funding, media coverage, and recognition than their male counterparts. Oftentimes, women find themselves left in the shadows, while men get to shine in the spotlight. This contrast is not a reflection of ability, dedication, or passion, but rather a matter of the gender inequality that persists in the sports world. 
One of the most notable examples of sex discrimination is when the U.S. women’s soccer team fought for equal pay and treatment back in 2022, arguing for compensation equal to that of their male counterparts. Although they boasted outstanding achievements, they lacked recognition for their dedication to the game. Even athletes of different sports, such as basketball and ice hockey champions, shared a similar sentiment and resonated with this lack of equality. The lawsuit gradually spread its influence worldwide, as more female soccer players from various countries advocated for a better, more equitable playing field. Eventually, this discrimination brought on by the U.S. Soccer Federation came to an end when the dispute settled in favor of the women’s team. 
Unfortunately, the equal pay lawsuit is not the only example of gender imbalance in the world of sports, despite the progress made since the United State’s 1972 Title IX law, which forbade sex-based discrimination in federally financed programs. This gender disparity is partly influenced by the demands of the sports entertainment industry, which revolve around decisions regarding championship funding, amount of equipment, and even the quality of food for sports teams, according to a 2021 investigation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  
"Everything in this country revolves around money,” said Brandon Williams, a PHS Physical Education teacher and track coach. “Men’s sports bring in a lot of money, [while] women’s sports bring a lot of [financial] problems.”  
Recently, gender inequality in women's sports teams was yet again highlighted when Jorge Vilda, the coach of the Spanish women’s soccer team, was dismissed on September 5, 2023. The allegations of inappropriate behavior against him included forcibly kissing an athlete on the team recently, which became the turning point in his demotion. These accusations have followed Vilda since he was hired in 2015, with accounts of sexism, controlling behavior, and unequal pay. Last year, 15 Spanish players, with 12 from his own team, protested against his inappropriate behavior, but it was only until after these concerns reached the breaking point that they were effectively addressed.  
A reason for the monetary gap in womens’ sports seems to lie in what the average person finds entertaining in sports. A bold rush down the field. A powerful slam dunk. These are the actions that often get fans riled up during major sporting events, enhanced with dramatic angles and gripping commentary. For viewers, stunning feats of athleticism are eye candy, which according to an NBC News article in 2018, increase hormone levels and neurotransmitter chemicals such as dopamine, a chemical that increases happiness and excitement. As a result, men’s sports, which often demonstrate more action, can be seen as the more popular sport.
“I think people who watch sports want to look more at physicality… and men’s sports seem to fulfill those people who want to watch those more entertaining sports,” said Jaiden Xu ’25, a basketball enthusiast. 
However, in pursuit of forging the latest, hottest sports highlight, a Duke University article stated in 2015 that men’s sports often make sacrifices on the tactical aspect of the sport––an area that women, conversely, tend to focus on more. In sports such as tennis, gymnastics, and volleyball, where the technical aspects stand out, female athletes tend to excel. Yet, when it comes to male athletes competing in these female-dominated sports, preferences seem to shift. As reported in an article written by The Atlantic in 2015, fans express a greater interest in watching men perform exhilarating shots and breathtaking moves, indicating that there is some unresolved gender bias in the sports industry. 
However, public perception of women’s athletic ability seems to be shifting, after the Nebraska volleyball team set a record for the highest women’s sporting event attendance, with over 92,000 fans cheering in the crowd. In addition to that astounding record, FIFA recorded more than 1,715,000 tickets sold out for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand, with staggering attendance numbers at its openers. With this surge of interest taking a turn in achieving gender equality, women’s sports are receiving the recognition they deserve for their exceptional skill and talent. While watching women’s sports undoubtedly offers a source of entertainment, it’s also an essential step to facing the inequality women have carried on their backs for far too long. Perhaps it’s time for people to explore an alternate side of sports and embrace a fresh approach to the game. In breaking down these barriers, the sports world can move forwards towards a more inclusive environment, where, regardless of gender, athletes can be celebrated for their abilities.

A Dive into Gender Bias in Sports

  In the past few months, PHS boys varsity soccer team Head Coach Wayne Sutcliffe made the decision to step down after more than 25 years. Leading the PHS boys varsity team in past years to 19 division titles, seven Mercer County Tournament titles, and two state titles, Sutcliffe’s career as the head coach is considered by many as legendary. 
   Sutcliffe has led the team to numerous victories and titles, and as such, his decision to step down has initiated reflection and recognition from the team. The decision ultimately came down to timing and setting the groundwork for future coaches and athletes to succeed. 
    “There was never a day in the 26 years that I've coached that I didn't enjoy ... [but] to do something for 26 years is a long time and I felt as though I gave everything I could,” said Sutcliffe. “The team and the program overall, are in really good shape right now in terms of health and we have a lot of good players. ... It's important to me to leave the team in a better place than it was, even when I became a coach, for the rest of the staff.”
   With Sutcliffe stepping down, there will be a new head coach the following season, but despite the change in staff, there should be little to no change in the way the team is run.
   “I get the same question from a few people that I've talked to, … asking what I'm going to change about the program,” said former Assistant Coach Ryan Walsh, who will be succeeding Sutcliffe’s role as head coach the upcoming fall. “Coach Sutcliffe has won 19 division titles, seven MCTs, [and] two state tournament titles. So what am I supposed to change? My goal is to keep doing and keep practicing his beliefs.”
   As the team bid farewell to their esteemed coach, players on the team, including co-captain of the boys varsity team Nick Matese ’24, , reflected on the transformative impact that Sutcliffe has had on their soccer journey. 
   “Throughout three years of being on his teams, Coach Sutcliffe has helped me improve a lot as a player through his encouragement and constructive criticism, which he was always able to deliver in an effective and positive way,” said Matese. “He created a team culture that really focused on support and togetherness." 
   Beyond the tactical elements of the game, Sutcliffe's team has succeeded because of his capacity to inspire and motivate them at crucial times. 
   “Looking back, I can remember some of his team talks before overtime periods in games such as Hightstown this season or Notre Dame and Steinert the year before,” said Matese. “He had a great ability to fire up the team when we needed it the most.”
   The team mentality that Sutcliffe has cultivated is one in which each player feels empowered to accept criticism and use it as a springboard for improvement. In addition, Sutcliffe's emphasis on efficient communication, which he views as one of the most important components of the game, has helped the players feel more united and cohesive.
   “He's always been there. He's always been pretty vocal, just taking control,” said Matthew Chao ’25, one of the players on Sutcliffe’s varsity team. “[We’ve] had some problems this past season, but he still did his best to show up to be there for us every step of the way.”
   Although Sutcliffe’s coaching journey has been filled with numerous victories, he recognizes that the most rewarding aspect of leading a team lies in the strong connections he’s formed with his players and watching them grow in the face of new challenges. 
   “[I will] never forget what it was like to win a state title. But next to those are the most important things,” said Sutcliffe. “In games, these moments [in my memory] about how young players develop, grow, and mature into different [people] than they might have been when they got here... those are the really important things [to me].”
   These connections that are made, starting as early as freshman or later as seniors, have remained strong even after the players graduate from high school. 
   “I think it's pretty clear to see the connections he's established with all these players throughout the years, because if you just look at the captain's practice[s], you have these alumni who were on the team five, six, seven, eight years ago, and still coming back,” said Chao. “The fact that he was able to establish these connections with other players really helped build a pretty tight team and … established a good team culture.”
   Sutcliffe’s impact and influence on the players are undeniable, inspiring many young athletes to push themselves into becoming better, not just as soccer players, but as people as well. Sutcliffe has not only had an impact on the athletes, but he has also guided and mentored his co-workers into becoming better versions of themselves, setting an example for them to build off of when it is eventually their turn to take over. 
   “[Sutcliffe] has taught me so much about being a coach, and a player's coach, really,” said Walsh. “When I came out of college, I loved soccer, I was good at soccer, but I wasn't a good coach …[Sutcliffe] really taught me how to properly manage a team. He was really good at making connections with all of the players … and he really helps players improve every day.”
   Returning players are excitedly anticipating the next chapter under Walsh's guidance as the team looks to the future. With a strong foundation built by Sutcliffe, the team is ready to embrace the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead. 
   “I'm looking forward to next season as we have a lot of returning guys with experience, and Coach Walsh is a really great coach to lead us,” Matese said.
   Together, Sutcliffe and Walsh have been able to work together as a cohesive team to foster success over the course of multiple seasons. Their combined efforts have created a positive and nurturing environment for the players that Walsh will carry on, allowing them to flourish on and off the field. 
  “I hope that the next 26 years, [Coach Walsh will have] the same opportunities that he can do that for the next coach,” said Sutcliffe. “That will be my hope for a legacy.”

Spring sports recap 2023

   Clare Johnson ’23 waits in anticipation as she watches the ball flying towards her, ready to jump into action. Within a split second, Johnson crouches into position and catches the ball, prompting a roar of applause from the crowd.
   Beginning at the age of five, Johnson has dedicated an exceptional amount of time honing her skills as a catcher. Although she has run into some setbacks along the way, Johnson’s passion towards the sport has driven her forward.
   “I just really enjoy the team aspect of the game,” said Johnson. “Sometimes it gets hard, especially when you make a bad play, but you just have to let yourself learn from the mistake and improve the next time.”
   Johnson’s first year at highschool got off to a rocky start after the season was canceled due to COVID-19. Even during this time of isolation, though, she was able to showcase her skills and impress the coach. 
   “We only had two weeks of practice in person before we had to quarantine,” said Head Coach Marissa Soprano, who also teaches Johnson in her social studies class. “From the beginning, it was apparent that she was talented and hard working. When the team went to remote workouts, she was always there and worked hard.”
   This year, Johnson has stepped up and embraced the role of co-captain, working hard to create a supportive environment for the team. 
   “We really focused a lot on team bonding this year,” said Johnson. “Breakfast after Saturday morning practices and pasta dinners were a great way to hang out and bond as a team.”
   Growing into the role of a leader, Johnson has learned to take the initiative and to step out of her shell in order to guide the team efficiently, with much confidence and dedication. 
   “Clare is an exceptional catcher and she only improved as she moved through high school,” said Soprano. “She grew more confident in her abilities behind the plate and more vocal about calling plays for her teammates. She served as an excellent leader for the underclassmen both last season and this season.”
    Beyond organizing team building exercises, Johnson has made it a priority to boost team morale and encourage open communication among players. She has forged an incredible connection with her teammates while developing a cohesive dynamic among the team. 
   “Clare was an absolutely amazing leader and her knowledge of the game was also awesome,” said Simryn Patel ’26, one of Johnson’s teammates. “She was a powerful voice on and off the field, and she always knew where to go, even if the play didn’t have anything to do with her.”
   Although this has been Johnson’s final year on the team, it has been a season full of remarkable achievements. Through their collective determination and hard work, the team has accomplished qualifying for the state tournament—one achievement that has not been reached in years prior. 
   “Clare made multiple tag plates at the plate to get runners out which was phenomenal,” said Soprano. “Clare also performed well in the state game, keeping us in it with her pitch calling. It was a great performance to end her high school career.”
    As her high-school softball career comes to a close, Johnson is looking forward to leveling up her game in college, where she will continue to play club softball. For anyone looking to step up to the plate, Johnson has some words of encouragement.
    “Practice makes perfect and one mistake doesn’t dictate how the rest of your game will go, so shake it off and learn from it for next time,” Johnson said.

How far would you go to achieve the “perfect body”?
South Korea’s newest reality show, “Physical: 100,” delves
into this question with its “Squid Game”-like premise,
striving to discover the “fittest” among 100 contestants
of various body types and builds. From team games to
one-on-one matchups, the challenges are relentless and
the stakes are high, with a cash price of 300 million won
(around 230 thousand U.S. dollars) on the line. While the
games attempt to push each contestant’s willpower and
physical limitations, it also sheds light on the concept of
physical perfection and its impact on society.
Behind the glittering aesthetics and stunning visuals
of Korean content, especially in the recent global
phenomenon of K-pop, lies a relentless pursuit of
perfection. Big entertainment companies not only seek
popstar-worthy skills, such as captivating vocals and
polished dancing moves, but also prioritize appearance,
the major factor in determining if one will make it. In this
highly competitive industry, even
the slightest imperfection is not
tolerable if one cannot meet
the society’s beauty
standards, which includes features like radiant skin, double eyelids, a small
face, and a tall, thin figure. In female idols, an hourglass
body shape is the most desirable, while for males, they
are expected to have a muscular and toned physique.
However, the participants in “Physical: 100” attempt
to debunk the body standard Korea has set and promote
a more inclusive image of the human
body. For example, women show off
their toned muscles and larger frames.
Meanwhile, men who don’t fit into
the traditional mold of a muscular
physique fight proudly in the arena.
They play a role in challenging the
stereotypes of the desired Korean
physique, sending a message to
audiences that it’s important to break
away from the norms.
Unfortunately for K-pop idols,
the pressure to maintain a perfect
appearance extends further than just
the selection process. They face the expectation to maintain
a flawless appearance and youthful image, forcing them
to resort to grueling
gym workouts,
heavy dieting, and
dangerous weight 
loss methods.
According to
Business Insider
in 2019, these
consistent routines
are doing more harm
than good, contrary to
what might appear
on screen. 
However, Korea’s appearance-obsessed culture is
not just limited to the entertainment industry but has
expanded to the rest of the nation. Many Koreans and
other East Asians feel the pressure to conform to to
societal beauty standards, leading to a surge in cosmetic
surgery procedures. As such, South Korea has emerged
as the plastic surgery capital of the world.
This obsession with achieving the ideal
appearance extends beyond facial features
and includes striving for the ideal body type
as well, with the belief that it can build up their
status in society. The link between physical
appearance and success creates a harmful
notion as it builds onto the pervasive issue of
valuing physical attractiveness above all else,
degrading individuals to just their external
features. By placing a high standard and value
on visual appeal, it can claw people from the
inside and set up an unhealthy environment
for adults and youth.
For a show that seeks to find the “perfect body,”
physical perfection isn’t what the challenges attempt to
determine. Instead, it shows viewers the beauty of diverse
body types and celebrates their individual strengths,
challenging the notion of what physical perfection is. No
body type is superior to another, and each individual
excels in different areas of athleticism, whether that is
flexibility, stamina, or speed. In addition, the series forces
people from around the world to look beyond physical
appearance, and instead at one’s devotion, resilience, and
resourcefulness, as they navigate through the matches.
“Physical: 100” offers a refreshing and exhilarating take
on physical competition — one that prioritizes body
positivity, inclusivity, and individuality over the narrow
notions of physical perfection.

“Physical: 100” is not just about attaining the “perfect body”

As the spring season begins, the PHS girls
golf team sets off in full swing for the first time.
The team had made an impressive start to their
first year as a PHS sports team, carrying a 3–0
record so far as they aim to maintain their peak
form heading further into the season. The team
dominated the Lady Bombers Tee Off Classic
Tournament on April 19, achieving first place.
 “We’re gonna have three home matches this
season, which is a lot fewer than we’ve had in the
past. But that’s super exciting, especially because
we get to go on . . . a much nicer course to play with
in the past,” said Madeleine Zang’s ’23, PHS girls
golf team captain.
 This year, the team has seven new additions,
ranging from new players to experienced golfers,
who weren’t on the co-ed team the previous
season.
 “We have a bunch of seniors and a lot of
freshmen I think that signed up. So I think [that
is a] really interesting district team dynamic,”
Zang said.
 Despite the changes in the team roster, they have
developed a strong, dynamic, and supportive
atmosphere, contributing to a tight knit team
culture both on and off the course.
 “I think that [the team has] a really positive vibe,”
said Shreya Gaekwad ’25, one of the new members
of the girls team. “Everyone’s supportive [of] each
other and [we] play as a team.”
 The team practices allow the players to improve
their golf game in an encouraging, yet competitive
atmosphere that motivates the golfers to record
lower scores on the course.
 “I believe I have become more consistent on the
course and I can definitely see that coming from
the fact that I am basically playing on the course
everyday,” said Raima Srivastava ’25, one of the
golfers on the girls golf team. “I can see my score
improving everyday.
Prior to this year, the PHS Golf Team had been coed. Efforts from Zang, as well as the current boys
golf team Coach Patrick Noone, were the backbone
for the start of a separate team.
 “[After the 2021 county tournaments], more girls
showed interest, and the boys golf coach, Patrick
Noone, met with the superintendent over multiple
years to institute a Princeton High School girls golf
team, which was finally approved for this school
year,” said Zang. “I know that I, along with all of
the other members of the golf team, were ecstatic
about having our very own team.”
 Girls golf Coach Jess Monzo is eagerly anticipating
stepping into this new role due to his background
in coaching wrestling, as well as guiding the players
with an encouraging mood.
 “It is extremely polar opposite from the other sport
I coach at PHS. Golf is very laid back and relaxing,
but the mental aspect is very much similar,” said
Monzo. “The truth is in golf you have to continue
to stay positive.”
 While the journey to getting the program into
play has been challenging, the players are making
the most out of this opportunity. As they strive to
level up their game, at the same time, they also look
forward to making valuable memories through
their commitment to golf.
 “A memorable time with the team was playing
‘best ball’ on the course, where you play golf and
play from the best shot,” said Srivastava. “It’s always
such a fun game and we don’t have to worry about
our scores, [since] it’s mostly for practice and fun.”
 What originally started out as a dream has become
a reality for Zang’s senior year season.
 “So far this season, our team has been playing
amazing, and everyone has shown immense team
spirit,” said Zang. “For the future, I hope the
Princeton High School girls golf team continues to
thrive; I know that we are all excited to see how far
our team can go in the game of golf!”

PHS girls golf team kicks off their first season

Breaking color barriers, paving pathways, and making history is just a glimpse into the impact of Black athletes in the sports world. From NBA player Kobe Bryant changing the game of basketball with his “Mamba Mentality,” to tennis player Venus Williams encouraging young Black girls to play tennis, to the USA volleyball team player Jordan Thomspon raising racial awareness through her social media platform, Black athletes have challenged the inequality they face to strive for a better world. Whether they’re on or off-court, the determination, resilience, and enthusiasm of these athletes inspire students to follow their legacy.

Venus Williams: Tennis
 In one swift motion, Williams pushes forward with an electrifying spirit and swings with all her might. The entire point looks effortless, but through the withering heat, sweat trickles down her skin, and she pants as she retreats to the baseline of the Wimbledon grass court, ready for Lindsay Davenport’s serve.
Gritty and bold are expressions to describe her dominating playing style, and her “never quit” mentality is what has contributed to an astonishing four Olympic gold medals and seven Grand Slam titles, as well as being the first African-American woman to receive Wimbledon’s Venus Rosewater Dish — a fitting name. 
   “I was first struck by her precise speed at hitting the racket. Along with that, her overall commitment towards the sport was a huge inspiration for me,” said Ruhee Hedge ’25, an avid tennis fan. 
At the young age of four, Williams’ father, Richard Williams, introduced her to tennis on public courts, where her younger sister, Serena Williams, watched, and became inspired to do the same. Soon after, Richard Williams trained the two with some help from his 78-page plan, guiding them to hone their skills on the court for hours on end. As a result, one of Williams’ most notable weapons is her serve, which has flawless timing, speed, and grace. 
“I enjoy watching Venus’ technique, the way she uses her body weight to push the ball onto the other side of the court with a lot of momentum. I also enjoy her energy and attitude, which I believe has gotten her very far in her career,” said tennis player Dia Beri ’25. 
Despite her calm demeanor, Williams’ fierceness on court withstands even the toughest of opponents and is evident through her outstanding athleticism and mentality. Redefining the sport to a whole other level, she constantly raises the bar both physically and mentally for other players. In fact, many rising stars, like Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens, have modeled their technique after Williams, and look up to her not only as a player, but as a person. Her remarkable sportsmanship and respect for other players has carried her to greater heights, most notably to the 2015 U.S. Open Sportsmanship Award. Supporting her sister, Serena Williams, is also something that comes naturally to Williams, who humbly accepted her loss at the 2017 Australian Open and praised her little sister for her 23rd Grand Slam.
“When I was younger, I met Venus Williams twice and watched her play a match. Ever since then, I have kind of seen her as someone to model my game after. She has power, physical strength, and great placement of the ball. It’s always cool watching her play,” said varsity girl’s tennis player Lada Labas ’25.
Off the court, Williams is vocal about supporting equal compensation for players and advocating for gender equality in sports. She led a campaign with UNESCO and the Women’s Tennis Association in 2006, which eventually led to Wimbledon implementing a policy for equal prize money for all genders. 
Along with bolstering these foundations, Williams has learned to work her way to the top despite being diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause muscle pain and chronic fatigue. She has stayed resilient throughout her diagnosis and shown the world the dominant force she is on court, rousing a new generation of players to stay focused, courageous, and resilient. 
“I believe that Venus’ will to keep winning is above many upcoming tennis stars, which is why she is so successful… She’s proof that even if you don’t come from a well-off family and rich private lessons, you can make something of yourself and become successful if you put in the effort,” Beri said.

Kobe Bryant: Basketball
 Dribbling the basketball from one hand to another with sweat running down his face, Kobe Bryant runs through the obstacle of people and jumps with all his strength, shooting right before the buzzer sounds. The crowd cheers and yells in excitement as the ball swooshes through the net, marking one of his greatest games against the Toronto Raptors. 
His fans and teammates described him as being tough and determined, an attitude that allowed him to spend 20 years in his NBA career, achieving awards such as Sportsman of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly award. 
“I really admire Kobe Bryant — he [was] one of my favorite NBA players. I enjoy[ed] watching his attitude during his games,” said Flora Xu ’26. 
At the age of three, Bryant started playing basketball because of his admiration for the Lakers. His father, Joe Bryant, also played basketball in the NBA. He played for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers. However, when Bryant turned six, his father retired from the NBA and taught him basketball.
“He always [encouraged] his teammates and always [tried] his hardest. When he [missed] a shot, he never [gave] up but kept on trying until he makes it. This taught me to never give up on anything I do,” Xu said.
Bryant’s dedication and passion for the game was incomparable to anyone else, which was evident in his approach to every game. While on court, Bryant showed strong leadership by taking control of the game with the support and faith of his teammates. His “Mamba Mentality” became synonymous with hard work and relentlessness, giving people around the world the hope to chase their dreams. His success, accomplishments, and inspiration towards others wasn’t just on the court. Off the court, Bryant was known for his philanthropy, most notably through his support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the After-School All-Stars program. 
Continuing to inspire others after he retired from the NBA, Bryant started sharing his skills and knowledge for basketball with children. He instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and determination that are part of the Mamba Mentality, even opening the Mamba Sports Academy, which gives players of all ages opportunities to train diligently.   
“I admire that Kobe Braynt [was] a hard worker... he [played] basketball [at] his best,” Kelton Gibbs ’26 said. 
At the age of 41, Bryant was in a helicopter with his 13 year old daughter Gianna, flying to her basketball game. However, the helicopter crashed, and the two passed away along with other passengers. This loss left many heartbroken.  Bryant’s life was cut short, but his impact on the basketball world transcends his passing, leaving behind a lesson on how determination, work ethic, and a drive to succeed will always take one to great heights. The world didn’t just witness the loss of a great athlete, but also a devoted father and loving husband whose memory continues to touch people’s lives.
“Something I learned from Kobe is that if you work extremely hard, you can achieve almost anything,” Gibbs said.

Jordan Thomspon: Volleyball
With precision and power, Jordan Thompson soars above the net, delivering a hit that sends the ball crashing to the ground. The court is full of lively energy and uplifting cheers from the crowd as they egg her on. With her explosive jumps, unrelenting spirit, and fierce determination, Jordan Thompson is becoming a household name in the volleyball world.
Thompson’s path to becoming an outside hitter for the USA volleyball team wasn’t always so clear. Everyone expected her to follow in her father’s footsteps, who played professional for the Harlem Globetrotters.    
However, she turned to volleyball when the intense physical contact that came with basketball grew too much for her. As she continued to play, Thompson’s demeanor changed. At the start,  she was more timid and reluctant to play rough, according to her mother in an interview with NBC Sports, but through her journey, she has learned to assert her dominance on court. 
“I think part of watching Jordan Thompson play is that she is a complete powerhouse on the court. You can really see it. She’s a natural leader, especially as the outside hitter; not only is she  clutch player, she’s also the main attacker on the court,” said Zoe Nuland ’25, a member of the varsity volleyball team.   An alumna of the University of Cincinnati, Thompson finished her four years there as an all-time leader in kills, an attack   that is recorded                                    when the opponent doesn’t return the ball, setting both a school and National Collegiate Athletic Association record. By the end of the season, the USA volleyball team’s coach, Karch Kiraly, discovered Thompson, who would come up to be starter of the team, a position reserved for a player who sets the tone for the entire match.
However, with great responsibility also comes great challenges. One of the toughest adversities Thompson had to conquer was learning to deal with her injuries. While training at University of Cincinnati, Thompson tore her right arm’s AC, a ligament responsible for supporting the limb. She underwent surgery and kept her arm protected in a brace for two months before fully coming back to her routine. Yet again at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, Thompson hurt her ankle and was confined to supporting her teammates from the sidelines. According to an interview with Just Women’s Sports in 2022, through this obstacle, Thompson  learned to persevere and come back stronger as an Olympic Gold Medalist.
“She is a passionate player, hard worker, super talented, and she’s completely on top of her mental game, which is such a key aspect to being a great volleyball player. On her Instagram, you can tell that she is constantly putting in work inside and outside the gym,” Nuland said. 
Off the court, Thompson works in a partnership with Under Armour for “The Athlete No One Saw Coming” campaign, whose mission is to empower young athletes and provide them opportunities to succeed without being compared to others. One of the few selected athletes for the campaign, Thompson was chosen for her impressive strength and ambition in her sport. As a part of her partnership, she held summer camps for promising athletes, where Thompson gave back to the community by teaching valuable volleyball skills to players and using the sport as a metaphor for persistence in real life. 
“She is also a major social and racial justice activist for the Black community, which makes her such an inspiration to not only me but to so many people who follow her story. She is constantly pushing for change in our communities and growth as a nation,” Nuland said.
Like her motto, “There is greatness inside of me and I’m capable of this,” Thompson inspires players to strive for excellence and push beyond the limits of the court, as she sets an example of never giving up.

Black Athletes Make an Impact On and Off Court

Fueled by the excitement of returning to a normal school year, PHS students are roaring with school spirit. With the start of the fall sport season and the recent “pack the cage” mentality that many have adopted, sporting events have offered students an opportunity to show support for their peers and display school pride. Of course, these events would not be complete without the captivating musical acts that entertain the crowd, so there is no shortage of work for PHS musicians to do in preparation. 
This September, two major school spirit events took place, both of which occurred on Friday, September 23: the annual Pep Rally and the Homecoming game. 
The Pep Rally occurs every year in September and gives the student body a chance to recognize and uplift our sports teams. Each team is individually called out, after which they are met with a round of applause from their peers. This event is purposefully held before  Homecoming  to  amp  up  school  spirit  before  the  big  game,  and  the  inclusion  of musical entertainment is integral to  keeping the crowd engaged and excited. This year, the Pep Rally took place after school on the turf, where two of PHS’s a cappella groups—The Cat’s Meow and Around 8—performed. As school has just started, there was little time to prepare for the gig, but the young musicians were confident that they would pull through with a good performance despite the time crunch.
 “The easiest part of practice is that we have so many great singers, that learning music has become a piece of cake. We can put together a new song every rehearsal,” said Matty Baglio ’23, the music director for Around 8. 
Around 8 performed the national anthem for the Pep Rally, while The Cat’s Meow performed the PHS alma mater.  
“We’re excited to be performing the alma mater this year. It’s nice to be part of such a fun tradition that’s so important to PHS culture,” said Rowan Gilmore ’23, a singer in The Cat’s Meow. 
The highly anticipated PHS annual Homecoming game took place later that day at 7:00 pm. Every year, students excitedly show up to the first home football game of the year to show off school spirit, enjoy a night of fun, and support our student athletes. Just as exciting is the halftime performance, which starred the PHS Studio Band. For the few weeks leading up to the performance,  Studio Band musicians worked hard to make this year’s performance even more sensational than last year’s. 
Since the Homecoming game wasmoved up a month this year, Studio Band members were also under a time crunch to rehearse. 
“We [were] just starting to prepare so the difference this year is that we have less time.  We [had] like two and a half weeks to pull this together. I would say it’s more frantic this year,” said Band Director Joseph Bongiovi. 
Despite the ticking clock, younger students were looking forward to performing in the classic halftime show. 
“I [was] most excited to be playing in front of my classmates and other friends because I  love  to  play  in  front  of  people  I  know...  I  know  [people]  will  listen  to  what  we  are  playing and really enjoy it,” said drummer Owen Barry ’25. 
After only a few weeks of practice, Studio Band was already beginning to collaborate and merge their sounds—the rhythm section in particular meshed very quickly.   
“I  mean  the  rhythm  section  sounds  great—it’s  our  piano,  bass,  drums—and  the  trumpets sound good this year too,” Bongiovi said.  
Past  performances  have  included  hits  like  “Treasure”  by  Bruno  Mars  and  Stevie  Wonder’s “Sir Duke.” Before their performance, Studio Band’s production was under wraps, so the set list was kept secret between its members. 
As it turned out, the setlist for the concert was particularly engaging for the audience. Studio Band ended up dazzling the crowed with their renditions of “September” by Earth Wind and Fire, “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars, “Lose Yourself ” by Eminem (rapped flawlessly by Koen Moulton ’23), “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, and “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was particularly well recieved by the audience after a surprise solo by PHS Principal Frank Chmiel.
Overall, though there was limited time to rehearse, PHS musicians pulled through with a well-done performance. Despite the football team’s loss, the engaging musical performances  and    sense  of    community  instilled  the  sense  of  school  spirit  that  Homecoming is all about

Have you done the Wordle today? Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it. Instead, I’ll give you a tip: Kick off with a word that has a lot of vowels and common consonants in it. Words such as “roate,” “arson,” and “adieu” are commonly used among players. For the past few months, this newfound word game has been the talk of PHS. From sharing colored grids on Twitter to creating memes —  such as John Cusack holding a Wordle grid in replacement of a boombox — Wordle has become a much bigger phenomenon than originally envisioned. 

The goal of the game is quite simple: to guess the five-letter word of the day in, at most, six tries. After entering a guess, each tile will turn into one of three different colors: gray, yellow, or green. Gray means that a letter is not in the word of the day, yellow means the letter is in the word but is in the wrong place, while green means it is both the correct letter and in the right spot. Unlike most current games, Wordle is only available on the web browser, but it can be easier to access if the website is added as a shortcut on your phone’s home screen.

“Wordle is fun… it is a short brain game that anyone can play,” said Jacqueline Zang ‘25, a daily player.  

Josh Wardle, the creator of Wordle, designed this game as a gift to his partner, Palaak Shah, who is a fan of The New York Times’ Spelling Bee and crossword puzzle. Delighted by this act of love, Shah contributed to making this game possible and helped pick out the words she knew (about 2,500) out of roughly 12,000 five-letter words in the English language. However, ever since The Times has bought the game for a “low seven figures,” a great deal of people are disappointed that the words have seemingly gotten more difficult, accusing the newspaper of altering the words, including ones with repeated letters, like the word “rupee.” In response, The Times released a statement explaining that the words have stayed the same and that they are also making improvements along the way to make the game more enjoyable.  

“Some people hate it, some people love it. I do feel like some of the words are harder, but I do enjoy that there is a better variety of words, which is [both] good and bad, because while the better variety makes it more challenging and fun, some people had never heard of the words before. For example, the word “caulk.” That day, everyone was like ‘Is that even a word?’, so it can be a bit harder,” said Gabby Kaputa ’25, who’s played the viral game since January.

The New York Times has recently gained popularity due to its online games, including Wordle. Part of its popularity is due to simplicity, a component that is incredibly appealing to players. However, the public hasn’t always embraced word games the way they do now. That all changed after World War II started and blackouts were widespread throughout New York because the puzzles helped to create a sense of serenity amid the events. 

Many are feeling a similar collective stress during the pandemic as well, and playing Wordle has helped boost people’s moods. Guessing words and sharing ideas with one another has given people a reassuring routine during these uncertain times. 

“It’s a nice puzzle to wake up to each morning, and a fun challenge to see how many guesses it’ll take compared to your friends,” said Henry Langmack ’25, who’s been playing since the new year.  

Wordle is a game many people can play, but it does include its own set of challenges. Since everyone is striving to find the same word, it feels as if players are figuring it out together, despite the independent format of the game. Not only do people appreciate its amusement and shareability, but it has also proven to be great for improving memory and brain health. These advantages have contributed to the increasing amount of attention Wordle has gained in the past few months, to the extent that spin-offs such as Worldle, Octordle, and Taylordle have been created. 

“It is a game that everyone can play, and it’s not easy [since] you want to guess the word in the least tries possible. Also because there is only one word [to guess per] day, it prevents people from becoming bored quickly,” Zang said. 

This puzzle was released in early October, and its popularity has skyrocketed since then. And the reason for this is evident: amidst all the chaos in the world, Wordle provides us with a sense of stability. 

Wordle: the viral word game

Whether it be on the street or on the runway, fashion is everywhere. Many students at PHS are immersed in it, but if you ask them where their favorite styles came from many would not be sure. In honor of Black History Month and celebrating fashion origins, we have gathered some of the most influential fashion styles, comebacks, trends, and accessories that emerged from Black culture and icons like Destiny’s Child and Diana Ross.

Streetwear arose from the hip-hop movement, which emerged in the Bronx during the 1980s as a new style of music and dance, eventually becoming a prominent part of black culture. It was originally created as a response to whiteness being the standard of the “ideal citizen” in the 1950s–60s. Eventually, streetwear became the visual form of hip-hop and rap culture, pushing boundaries that allowed the Black community to express culture and style without conforming to what was “acceptable” at the time. It became even more integrated in the fashion industry with the emergence of luxury, high-end streetwear brands such as Off-White, a Milan-based and Black-owned fashion house founded by the late Virgil Abloh. Streetwear has evolved since its beginnings and has elevated to become a strong influence in fashion.

Y2K is shorthand for “the year 2000,” and it is making a comeback! Staple pieces like lace camisoles, low rise jeans, metallic clothing, baguette bags, and butterfly hair clips were linked to the mid-1990s to early-2000s era, inspiring the Y2K style that began right when the Internet started booming. Many would think that this vogue surfaced with Bratz dolls or “Mean Girls” but in truth, it was Black culture – specifically Black artists – that shaped the aesthetic into the phenomenon it is today. Michael and Janet Jackson wearing shiny and futuristic clothing in their music video “Scream,” Black girl groups like Destiny’s Child sporting vivid tank tops and low-waisted jeans, and rapper Missy Elliott in athleisure are all examples of this.

Velour tracksuits were the new norm in the 2000s with brands like Juicy Couture and Baby Phat being in the spotlight. Like tracksuits, scripted necklaces were also associated with the Y2K era. A notable example is when Carrie Bradshaw wore a nameplate necklace in “Sex in the City,” inspiring people to join the trend. However, this trend truly originated from Black and brown kids, and it was popular within their communities much earlier on. The scripted necklaces were a way for people to express themselves and their identity; a symbol of pride in their culture. Y2K is one of the prominent aesthetics of the past few decades, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Black culture.

Sneakers as we now know them made their first appearance in the 1970s and became a trend around a decade later. Originally, they were made for only playing sports, but that all changed when Michael Jordan launched his Air Jordans line, produced with Nike, in 1985, causing the popularity of sneakers to surge in hip-hop culture. Even now, Jordans are still sought after. These sneakers are featured prominently in the music industry by Black artists in their everyday wear and performances. Sneakers have become so popular because of Black culture to the point that they are spotted globally.

Bucket hats are the perfect versatile and stylish accessory. At first, like trainers, bucket hats were only for practical use. Fishermen used them as protection from rain and soldiers wore them in combat. As the mod subculture of soul-loving hippies known for their love of motorized scooters and fashion rose to prominence in London, the bucket hat took on a more refined and elegant style and quickly spread throughout Great Britain. However, it was the bucket hat’s incorporation into Black culture that made it rise in prominence. Icons like Rihanna, who paired a pink bucket hat with a Dior slip dress, and LL Cool J, who is known for his red Kangol bucket hat, contributed to the beginning of this newfound trend. Now, luxury brands like Dior and Prada sell them in a variety of patterns and textures. Bucket hats may not have been invented by Black culture, but it’s because of Black culture that more and more people are adding bucket hats as an essential piece to their outfits.

Hoop earrings are some of the most common accessories today, but they have been a symbol of Black women’s empowerment since the 1920s. The large and lavish jewelry piece was created in the fourth century in North Africa (around Sudan). Centuries later, Black women in the United States chose to use this piece of their heritage to showcase their beauty. Beginning in the 1920s–60s, hoop earrings were worn by activists for civil rights and Black power. However, later in the 1970s–90s they became associated with music and were showcased on Black disco and soul artists such as Diana Ross and Evelyn “Champagne” King. As different genres became more popular, hoop earrings were later seen on many rap and hip-hop artists. Additionally, hoop earrings have been a symbol of power and feminism pioneered by Black women, especially in the last century. In recent years, they have influenced people of all ethnicities and races.

With their colorful, glossy, and bold designs, pictures of acrylic nails on Pinterest are often the first we save to show our friends. Today, they are considered to be a fashionable statement. However, in the late 20th century, many people considered wearing acrylic nails “cheap” and “trashy.” Over time, they were shown off in the media by influential people like famous runner Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo Jo), who showed off vibrant patriotic colors through acrylic nails at prominent races in the 1980s. With this prominent appearance of acrylic nails in the media, they eventually became more mainstream and popular. From famous celebrities such as Lizzo to people in our day to day lives, acrylics can be seen everywhere. This trend was made possible by Black women who normalized and popularized them.
